Walking on leaves and glass, drinking coffee, thinking about the present and counting the days. At lunch I take my coat under my arm and walk for awhile in the park.
A parent leads two young brothers along a path. Not older than ten or eleven. The younger of the two jumps up onto a bench, loses his balance and falls - somehow managing to land on his feet. 'Did you fail?' asks the older. I can't help but think that this is a strange choice of phrase. 'Yeah' comes the response. Disappointed. 'That's life,' says the older, reassuringly, 'you try: you fail.' A bleak world view for a child, but I can't help smiling.
I spend some of my lunch break thinking about this astute remark. I eat my sandwich leaning against the park memorial, the sun is shining. Some time passes, I pick up my coat and walk back to work.
